Zataria Multiflora is a bush type plant, 40-80 cm high, aromatic with lots of thin branches and much divided. Leaves are short with short petioles, round or ovate shape, 3-13 cm long and 5-7 cm wide. Leaves are tared to hart-like at the base and round to pointed at the tip.
Flowers are white in color and small round like, very dense. Flower tube is white and a bit longer than calyx.

Leaves and flowers are the medicinal parts of Zataria. Major compounds of the essential oil of this Iranian species are carvacrol and thymol. Linalool and P-cymene are scored as the next compounds.

Aerial branches of Zataria contain at least 0.6% essential oil, fatty acid, Oleanolic acid, β-Sitosterol and Betulin
The essential oil contains 69% phenol and mainly carvacrol and the main constituent of the non-phenolic part is P-Cymene.
Major constituents found in dry plant essential oil of this Iranian species are carvacrol (61.29) and thymol (25.18). Linalool and P-cymene are scored as the next compounds with 1.96 and 1.90 % respectively.
