What is Green Cardamom?

Botanical Specifications
Green cardamom is an herbaceous perennial tall plant with tuberous and thick rhizomes and multiple tubers. The leaves are hairless, linear-lanceolate, 30–60 cm long. The fruits are ovate, light green, 1-2 cm long, containing 18 seeds. The seeds are ovate, aromatic, and blackish brown. The flowers are white with yellow lines, produced in a loose spike.

It is a perennial and herbaceous plant, with branched creeping underground stems and flowering branches. The leaves are rectangular, lanceolate, pointed, hairless, and 30-60 cm long. Spikes are dense with short peduncles, and the parts of calyx and corolla are shorter than petals. The 2.5-cm long pods have small spines or thorns and are triangular in cross-section with three brown – dark red cells containing several aromatic seeds. The ovate fruit is 3.5 cm long and contains multiple seeds.
