Physical characteristics
Chinese lantern flower is a perennial plant with a height of 30 to 60 cm. The plant is branched and has running underground stems. Its above-ground stem is erect and has a cylindrical lower part. Moreover, the upper part of the stem is angular and covered with broad hairs. The leaves are ovate, broad at the base, and appear like a wedge- cuneate shaped. They are unequal on the sides and their tips are pointed to sharp. The margins are wavy to sinusoidal and the lobes are irregular. The leaves are 5 to 12 cm long and 9 to 14 cm wide. Additionally, they are dark green, irregular, oval, pointed, and broad, petioles are 1.5 to 6 cm long and contain thin hairs. The flowers are solitary and reddish-white. The calyx is 3 to 5 cm long and ovate or ovoid-globular, orange-red. The fruit is a berry with a diameter of 13 mm, red-orange. The fruit can be the size of a hazelnut or a cherry. The seeds are 1.5 to 2.5 mm long and yellow-brown.
