Botanical characteristics

The Echium Amoenum Flower (Borage Flowers) is a biennial or perennial plant, ranging in height from 20 to 80 cm. It features rough, hairy bases with glandular or nearly soft, pressed trichomes on the leaves, widespread elsewhere, and densely covered with short trichomes in the older parts. The stems are almost simple and upright.

Basal leaves measure up to 2 cm in length and 9 cm in width, are lanceolate, tapering towards the petiole, and have pointed tips. Stem leaves can reach up to 10 cm in length and 2 cm in width, and are lanceolate, with the upper ones broadening at the base without petioles.

The inflorescence is scorpioid cymes, often terminal, initially dense, and eventually distinctly elongated and sparse.

The bracts are linear-lanceolate, nearly the same size as the calyx. The calyces are almost stalkless, approximately 10 mm long when flowering, extending to 18-20 mm when fruiting, with linear lobes. The corolla is campanulate, 25-33 mm long, and purple-violet in color.

Stamens are unequal; anthers are about 5 mm long, distinctly furrowed, and densely pitted. The calyx is hairy. Furthermore, the fruit is a nutlet, distinctly furrowed, with a hard, dense shell.

Geographical distribution

Global distribution

This plant is native to Iran and is not cultivated in other countries.

Distribution in Iran

The Echium Amoenum Flower (Borage Flowers) grows in Mazandaran, Gilan, Qazvin, Khorasan, Alborz, Gorgan, Chalus, Ardabil, and Azerbaijan.

Cultivation ecology

This plant can be propagated using three methods, which can be implemented in both spring and autumn, as follows:

  1. Sowing seeds in fertile soil.
  2. Planting cuttings in sand during autumn.
  3. Dividing the rootstock in spring.
  • The sowing period for seeds spans from late March to early June. Depending on the geographical conditions of the cultivation area, sowing can be conducted in spring and autumn. If the winter temperatures in the geographical area of cultivation are not extremely cold, this plant can be sown in autumn. Plants sown in autumn can be harvested in May of the following year.
  • The optimal sowing time for seeds is autumn, with a seeding rate of 15 to 20 kg ha-1. The seeds germinate within 5 to 21 days depending on the cultivation environment. The sowing depth is 12 cm, with plant spacing of 40 to 50 cm and row spacing of 60 to 70 cm (seeding rate depends on the sowing method).
  • The best cultivation method for this plant is transplanting seedlings, which are transferred to the main field at the 4-6 leaf stage and planted 50 by 50 cm apart.
  • Indirect cultivation via seedlings is carried out in autumn or early spring. Seeds are sown in outdoor nurseries, and seedlings are transferred to the main field at the 6-8 leaf stage.
  • This plant thrives best in semi-humid, cold, and mountainous climates.
  • The Echium Amoenum Flower (Borage Flowers) thrives best in soils with high organic content and loamy texture, relatively rich, and with high drainage. This plant does not grow in saline soils, with the optimal soil pH range being 5 to 8 (the average suitable pH for its growth is reported as 6.6).
  • Irrigation should occur every 7 to 14 days. Over-watering should be avoided as it lowers the quality of flowering. Irrigation should be performed when the soil around the cultivation site dries out. The optimal water usage is 300 m3 ha-1, resulting in a flowering yield 2 to 3 times higher than rain-fed cultivation.
  • In areas with sufficient annual rainfall (more than 300 mm), the plant can be cultivated as a rain-fed crop. Under these conditions, the flowering period shortens, and from the third year onwards, the plant’s yield may decrease depending on climatic and geographical factors.
  • This plant flourishes in the second year of cultivation and has a lifespan of 5 to 7 years, with peak flowering occurring in the fourth and fifth years.

Required fertilizers:

  • Well-rotted animal manure (the plant is sensitive to un-rotted manure; some fully decomposed organic fertilizer should be added to the soil before planting. Furthermore, five tons of rotted manure should be added annually in autumn).
  • 30 kg of urea fertilizer should be added to the soil from early to mid-March under suitable climatic conditions to prevent plant frostbite.
  • 30 kg ha-1 of potassium fertilizer should be applied via foliar feeding along with animal manure to enhance the plant’s flowering.

Harvesting Echium Amoenum Flower (Borage Flowers):

Flowering starts in May and continues until mid-July, depending on the geographical conditions of the cultivation area. When about 70% of the plants in the field are in bloom, harvesting should commence immediately, as the flowers wither within three days. Harvesting takes place early in the morning and can take 4 to 14 days to complete depending on the geographical conditions.
