Botanical Specifications
Galbanum is an herbaceous perennial and monocarpic plant, green to grey in color, with a collar covered with lots of filaments, flowering only once in a whole life cycle.
The leaves are spread out on the ground, covered with small and short hairs, silver in color, and shiny surface.
Stems are up to 100 cm high, thick, tubular, pale, with a base 13-17 mm thick. The upper shoots are alternate, nearly verticillaster, and grooved.
Basal leaves are 15-30 cm long, 4-lobed, hairy, with lobes 0.5-1 mm long and 0.2 mm wide.
The upper pods are 4-5 cm long and 3.5 cm wide, membranous, almost peach hairy, amplexicaul, and swollen.
Clusters are dense, and fruit-bearing umbrellas have 10-20 radii, 4 to 5 cm long.
Mericarps are 15-22 mm long and 8-9 mm wide, and wings have a width of about 1 mm.
Umbels have 10-25 flowers, with hairy petals about 2 mm long. The sap is conducted through single or double interlobular dorsal canals on the inner surface of 6-rib vittae mericarps.
The flowers are small and yellow and borne in large, rounded compound umbels on a relatively short peduncle.
The flowers appear to be compound umbels, with 4-6 branches in each. The fruit is elliptical in shape with a light margin and narrow schizocarp and its sides.
Specifications of Galbanum Gum
The tuberous root of galbanum is full of sap and all the organs of the plant have a pungent odor.
A sap is exerted from the stem and/or crown of the plant through natural scorch or insect nutrition. For more production, gum exudates are usually produced by incision in the stem or cutting to speed up the gum production and increase its quantity.
The resulting sap dries by exposure to the air.
To extract the gum, workers initially dig up around the root, remove a part of the root from the collar, and let the galbanum resin gradually ooze.
Once every several days, a layer with a diameter of 0.5 cm is cut below the previously cut place to refresh the wound and cause more galbanum resin to ooze.
This operation continues until the maximum galbanum resin is extracted. The collected galbanum resin turns dark brown when exposed to the air.

- Drop/Tear like
It is typically a greenish or reddish white substance secreted naturally and is about the size of a hazelnut.
Tear like resin is the highest quality Galbanum, the inside color is yellow and transparent if broken and turns dark as exposed to air.
It has a bitter, astringent, and pungent taste, with a strong and unpleasant odor. If set on fire, it will melt and burn like frankincense.
- Mass sap
This type of resin, scoring as the second rate of quality, looks as irregular pieces and white in color.
The color mainly turns greenish, green-brown and/or greenish yellow or dark.
